When Treatment Feels Impossible: Getting Out From Under The Cloud Of Depression

Timmothy Washington

If you have been struggling with depression lately, you are not alone. More than 15 million people over the age of 18 deal with a major depressive episode in a twelve month period, while another 3.3 million deal with persistent depressive disorder. Treatment can involve medications, an exercise program, a support system, and individual therapy. The goal of treatment is to stop isolating and to find ways to become more engaged with life once again. While treatment may feel impossible, it's time to get started in treatment for depression if you are struggling with this common problem.

Talk with Your Doctor

Your doctor is usually the first professional you will talk to regarding feelings of depression. If you have been having feelings of hopelessness, extreme fatigue, and trouble being motivated for a few weeks or more, it's probably time to talk with your primary care physician about how you are feeling. The problem could be medical or emotional, and your doctor will be able to rule out medical causes for your symptoms while being able to refer you to the right service providers at the same time.

Find a Therapist You Can Work With

Most people avoid therapy because of a negative experience or the feeling that getting out to a therapist's office is too overwhelming. While it's going to be hard to commit to your first appointment, get yourself a therapist and focus on making it to your appointment to deal with your depression. Find a therapist that you feel comfortable with, and don't be afraid to try different providers if you don't feel a connection with your therapist.

Try Not to Isolate

People who are depressed often want to stay in bed alone without engaging with anyone. While it's healthy to take a break once in awhile, it is not going to help your depression to remain isolated from people for long periods of time. Whether you take a short walk in a busy park or sit in a cafe, try to surround yourself with other people without having to put too much effort into the process.

As you work with your depression, it's important to remember that you only have to deal with one day at a time. Don't be too hard on yourself and talk with your doctor about your symptoms. Be honest with treatment providers, and consider medication if your symptoms are not abating with conservative treatment. For more information, contact local professionals like The Center for Family Counseling, Inc.
